Preparing for Sungsang Baby Birth

The best position for babies born is the head is located below and feet above, so the head will come out first. But not all babies are in this position when it will be born. Some babies in the mother's womb are upside down, or called breech babies, so that special care is needed. The baby is not in the same position continuously while in the womb. During pregnancy, the baby will move a lot and change positions, then be in the position of the head down before labor. About 97 percent of babies are in a normal position or the head is under so the head can come out first at birth. But not all babies will be in this normal position. There is no definitive reason why a baby can be in a breech position. This condition generally cannot be felt directly by the mother but can be detected through ultrasound or ultrasound examination. But if the pregnancy has reached 36 weeks and over, chances are the mother can feel the baby's kick in the lower abdomen.

Various Position of Baby Sungsang Towards Childbirth

Here are some variations of breech positions that may occur during delivery:
  • Both feet are down with the head on.
  • The baby's buttocks are underneath with legs straight up close to the head
  • Buttocks are below with knees bent and feet close to the buttocks.
In addition to breech position, the baby can also be in a transverse position before delivery, ie the baby is in a horizontal position.

Sungsang Babies are Difficult to be Born with a Normal Childbirth

Babies that cross are generally easier to return to their normal position before birth, so they can be born through normal labor. But not so with breech babies. At 8 months of pregnancy, there is not much room left in the womb so that the baby is unlikely to change position. This makes breech babies need special handling. Delivery of breech babies is quite risky if done with a normal delivery, so labor is usually done by Caesarean section. Especially in the following conditions:
  • Babies weigh more than 3.8 kilograms or less than 2 kilograms.
  • Premature baby.
  • Baby's feet are under the buttocks
  • Low placental location.
  • Mother experiences preeclampsia.
  • The mother has a small pelvis, so there is not enough room to escape the baby.
  • Mother had previously undergone Ca surgery

How to Improve the Position of Baby Sungsang

There is a way that can be taken if a pregnant woman with a breech position baby still wants to undergo a normal delivery, namely by changing the position of the baby in the stomach. One method for changing breech babies' positions is the external cephalic version (ECV). This method is done by a special technique by an obstetrician by applying pressure on the belly of the pregnant woman to direct the baby's head down. Although it is possible that pregnant women will feel uncomfortable during the ECV process, this procedure is safe and the success rate of this method reaches 50 percent in babies with breech positions. Meanwhile, the success rate of ECV in the transverse position is higher, reaching 90 percent. But there are several conditions that can make ECV unsuccessful or cannot be done, for example twin pregnancy, placenta previa, slight amniotic fluid, or a history of bleeding in pregnancy. If the ECV is unsuccessful, a Caesarean section will generally be performed to deliver the baby, but is preceded by an ultrasound to ascertain the position and monitor the baby's heart rate. In addition, although rare, complications from ECV that can occur include the placenta from the uterine lining apart. This condition causes the baby to be born immediately by Caesarean section. This is what makes ECV procedures need to be well prepared. This procedure should also be carried out in a hospital with a team and complete facilities that are ready to anticipate in the event of an emergency. Conducting regular pregnancy and ultrasound examinations, can make breech baby's position can be detected and handled faster. Then with the help of doctors and trained medical experts, breech babies can have the opportunity to be born safely.
