Recognize the Three Stages in the Normal Childbirth Process

Normal childbirth experienced by each pregnant woman is different. But basically there are three stages of the process that pregnant women will go through, before finally meeting their beloved baby. The first stage in the process of giving birth is normal when pregnant women begin to experience contractions. Changes occur in the size of the cervix or known as the opening. The second stage is the process of pushing the baby to birth into the world. Then the third or final stage is the release of the placenta a few minutes after the baby is born.

First stage

At this stage you will experience two processes, namely the initial phase and the active phase. In the initial phase will occur:
  • The cervix is thinning and begins to open. You will feel mild contractions that last for 30-90 seconds. The longer, the contractions will be more regular, for example every 5 minutes.
  • Over time, the cervix will begin to open little by little. Usually there will be mucus mixed with blood coming out of the vagina.
  • The initial phase ends when the cervical opening reaches 4 - 6 The time needed to reach the opening varies from person to person. If this is your first pregnancy, this phase will generally take 6-12 hours. But if you've previously given birth, usually this phase will take place more quickly.
After passing through the initial phase, pregnant women will enter the active phase of labor. Signs of an active phase include:
  • The cervix will widen faster. Opening of the cervix in this phase reaches 6-9 The contractions that come will be stronger, longer, and more often.
  • You feel uncomfortable at this phase. You can feel leg cramps, pressure on your back, and may feel nauseous. If not, rupture of amniotic fluid will occur in this phase.
  • If you are still at home during this phase, then this is the right time to rush to the maternity hospital or hospital.
  • The intensity of pain that you will experience at this stage will increase. If you are not strong enough to hold it, you can ask for pain medication or an anesthetic injection.
  • The active phase usually lasts between 4-8 hours, if this is your first pregnancy, but it can be different for each person.
When the active phase ends, there is a period called the transition phase. Here the contraction will last stronger and longer, because the baby has descended into the birth canal. At this time you may feel fatigue, fear, or increasingly anxious. During this period, most women giving birth need a companion. However, there are also those who actually feel disturbed if there is a companion who tries to help. The transition phase will be longer if this is your first normal labor.

Second stage

This stage is called the process of pushing the baby out of your body. At this stage the opening of the cervix is full of 10 cm. It is at this stage that all your energy must be mobilized. The conditions that you experience at this stage are:
  • You no longer feel the contractions as in the active phase. The distance of the contraction is not so close that you have more time to rest before the next contraction appears.
  • Slowly your baby's position will go down to the birth canal. You are advised to be patient while waiting for the baby to come down and do not need to rush and deliberately push so that the baby out quickly. Let the sense of wanting to push come naturally. Be patient can also make your body relax and not stressed.
  • If the baby is at the bottom of your pelvis, the feeling of wanting to push will present itself. However, if the baby is still far from the lower door of the pelvis, usually you will not feel the sensation of wanting to push.
  • After a while, you will see a bulge in the tissue between the vagina and the anus when you push. Soon, the baby's scalp will be seen. This process is called for a mother, this is the moment awaited. If you're curious, you can ask for a mirror to see the baby's scalp.
  • At this time the feeling of wanting to push will feel stronger. Your baby's head pressure will feel more intense which is likely to be accompanied by strong pain due to stretching of the tissue in the birth canal.
  • The more you push, the baby's head will be pushed out more. Follow the instructions from the delivery assistant so that this process runs smoothly. With good encouragement, the baby's head will come out until the whole. After exiting, the baby's head will sideways because his shoulders start to spin to get out of the birth canal. With a push, his shoulder will come out, then followed by the body. Congratulations, your baby has been born.
  • Your baby's mouth and nose will be cleaned for easy breathing. Arriving in the world, the little one covered in blood mucus will be dried using a sterile towel by the midwife. Your baby will be wrapped to keep it warm. After the baby is born, the midwife or doctor will clamp the umbilical cord and cut it.
Furthermore, if there are no complications, you can immediately meet with the baby that you have conceived for nine months.

Third Stage

After the baby is born, you feel like relief and happiness that is unstoppable. You can hug and kiss your baby with great affection. However, the birthing process has not yet been completed. Here's the next process you will experience:
  • You still have to wait until the placenta comes out of the uterus. Usually the placenta will come out within 5-10 minutes after the baby is born. But there are also new ones that come out after half to 1
  • This stage can also be used to give early initiation of breastfeeding (IMD) to your child. IMD is very good for your baby and also your inner satisfaction. But not all babies want to suckle immediately when new born. Even so you do not despair, continue to hold the baby's lips to your breasts until he sucks the nipples.
  • After the placenta is born, the delivery helper will sew a tear in the birth canal, or if during childbirth an episiotomy is performed. Before the birth canal is sewn, you will be given a local anesthetic injection to reduce pain.
  • For those of you who are giving birth for the first time, usually the whole delivery process takes 10-20 hours. The delivery process can be faster if you have given birth normally before.
The process of giving birth normally does drain time, energy, and thought. But that is nothing compared to the results you get, which is to meet with the Baby. Congratulations on being a mother.
